That voice, the one in your head, that whispers less than sweet nothings to you – you know the one I mean.
The one that says
- You’re not good enough
- You don’t know what you are doing
- They won’t pay that much
- They’ll laugh at you
- They won’t take you seriously, who are you to have an opinion?
- You aren’t as good as they are
That’s the one – the one that says it is trying to protect you.
We are hard-wired to protect ourselves, to not take risks.
And yet we have an innate desire to stretch, to grow and to express ourselves. We want to move forwards, to experience new things and to become more than we are now.
So there you are – a dream in your hand and a whispering voice in your head.
You have no way to move forwards or backwards. You can see where you want to go but that moving towards your goal, it just isn’t happening.
The voice gets louder and you try to muffle it with more and more information to make you feel confident, that you have what it takes, that you know what you are doing.
Information that tells you what you should be doing but doesn’t help you understand why you aren’t actually doing it. You fret about your procrastination.
The voice gets louder. You become overwhelmed, uncertain and your confidence fades. The dream moves further and further into the distance.
That whispering voice is no longer whispering. But it is lying.
Inside yourself, you have everything you need and the strength to put it into action. You have a unique perspective to bring to the world, you have something to offer that no one else does and you will be welcomed for offering it – if you take yourself seriously and believe in yourself.
That whispering voice that tells you to stay put, it needs to be silenced. There is a stronger voice inside you that needs to be heard and come to the fore. It is your voice, your spirit and your energy. It is whispering to you all the time but you cannot hear it above the voice that needs to be silenced.
To hear it, you need to believe in yourself.
Shel Silverstein summed it up perfectly:
There is a voice inside of you that whispers all day long,"I feel this is right for me, I know that this is wrong."
No teacher, preacher, parent, friend or wise man can decide what's right for you--just listen to the voice that speaks inside.
What scares you?
Think about something that scares you – even a little bit. Why does it scare you?
There are some things that should scare us (jumping out of a plane comes to mind!) but there are many more that are about how we feel about ourselves, not the risks we are taking. These are the risks we need to challenge.
What is the worst thing that can happen if we take that small risk? If we only listen to that, we can never take the risk. We all need to listen to that deeper, quieter voice that says “yes, but what is the best thing that could happen”.
Take a small risk and put yourself to the test. Do something that takes you outside your comfort zone and see what that quieter voice says to you. Will your knees knock and your stomach turns circles – probably. Will you go to pieces? Unlikely.
Will you feel good about yourself because you have done it? Definitely.
Will you have turned down the volume on the whispering voice? Absolutely.
To start the journey we have to take the first step. To take the first step, we have to believe in ourselves and connect with how we will feel if we challenge ourselves and succeed.
Make that first step a small one. When you have taken it, your view of the world will be different, because you will be standing in a different place and one step closer to where you want to be.
